What is StoneDeks?
StoneDeks is a structural system that makes it possible to install natural stone, porcelain, pavers, and other compatible hardscape materials over wood or metal deck framing. Instead of finishing an elevated deck with traditional wood or composite boards, StoneDeks allows you to create a durable hardscape surface.
What is Elevated Hardscape?
Elevated Hardscape brings materials traditionally used for ground-level hardscaping—such as natural stone, porcelain, and pavers—to decks and other above-ground outdoor spaces. StoneDeks provides the structural system that makes Elevated Hardscape possible.
Can you really put stone or pavers on a deck?
Yes. StoneDeks SilcaGrate™ installs over properly designed deck framing to create a structural support layer for compatible natural stone, porcelain, brick, and concrete pavers. This makes it possible to create a hardscape surface where traditional deck boards would normally be used.
Are stone and pavers too heavy for a deck?
Stone and pavers are heavier than conventional decking, so the deck structure must be designed or evaluated for the intended loads. StoneDeks provides technical resources and design information to help building professionals properly design the supporting structure.
Can StoneDeks be installed on an existing wood deck?
In many cases, yes. If the existing deck structure is suitable for the intended loads and application, the old decking can potentially be removed and replaced with the StoneDeks system and a compatible stone or paver surface. Existing structures should be evaluated before installation.
Do I need a concrete slab to have a stone deck?
Not necessarily. StoneDeks allows compatible stone, porcelain, and pavers to be installed over properly designed wood or metal deck framing, opening up possibilities for stone surfaces in places where conventional ground-supported hardscape or concrete construction may not be practical.
What materials can I put on a StoneDeks deck?
StoneDeks can support a wide range of compatible hardscape materials, including natural stone, porcelain pavers, concrete pavers, brick pavers, and other suitable products. This gives homeowners and designers much more freedom in the appearance of an elevated outdoor space.
Where can Elevated Hardscape be used?

Is StoneDeks a new or unproven system?
No. More than 2.5 million square feet of StoneDeks SilcaGrate™ has been installed across residential and commercial applications. StoneDeks also provides technical documentation and professional resources for the design and installation of the system.
How do I know if StoneDeks is right for my project?

What is StoneDeks System?
StoneDeks System is the company that makes the SilcaGrate, a sub-floor support system that allows for the installation of hardscape materials on elevated decks, walkways, and more. The grates are installed on the frame and support the weight of various hardscape materials. StoneDeks System also offers other products, such as the SoilGrid, used for in-ground applications like stone pathways and patios.
What are SilcaGrates made of?
SilcaGrates are made from recycled material, some of which are lighter in color than others. This variation does not affect the strength of the SilcaGrate.
What are the weight and dimensions of the SilcaGrate?
The SilcaGrate measures 16 inches wide, 18 inches long, 1.5 inches thick, and weighs approximately 4 pounds.
Why are some of my SilcaGrates a different color?
The color variation in SilcaGrates is due to the use of recycled materials. Some grates may be lighter in color, but this does not impact their strength or functionality.
Installation Guidelines
What tools are required for installation?
Recommended tools include a drill or impact driver, circular or reciprocating saw, goggles, measuring tape, and hammer. For detailed recommendations and tips, visit the How It Works page.
How do you connect SilcaGrates to the floor joists?
Center the SilcaGrate on the floor joist and fasten it down with four #9, three-inch deck screws coated for pressure-treated lumber. Ensure the screws are placed into the holes at the edge of the grate.
Is it easy to cut SilcaGrates?
Yes, for customized cuts around posts or vents, you can use a circular saw, table saw, or sawzall. Remember to add blocking under any cut edge of the SilcaGrates.
Can I use the StoneDeks System on my existing deck?
Yes, the StoneDeks System is versatile and can be used to renovate existing decks by transforming them into stone decks. Installation may differ slightly from new constructions.
If I put skirting around my stone deck do I need to allow for ventilation?
Yes, definitely. Recommended ventilation is 1 square foot per 150 square feet of deck surface. Ventilation should be on at least 2 sides to enable air flow.

What kind of deck flooring material can be installed with StoneDeks System?
The system supports a wide range of materials, including natural stone pavers, porcelain, travertine, bluestone, brick pavers, slate, marble, and granite in various shapes, colors, and sizes.
What are the recommended stone dimensions that I can use on top of the StoneDeks System?

Are pavers too heavy for a deck?
Installing pavers on a deck requires a proper support structure to handle the additional weight. The SilcaGrate is designed to support the weight of hardscape materials and has been tested to withstand over 500 pounds per grate for at least 30 days.
What type of pavers can I use on top of your products?
The StoneDeks System is designed to be used with a variety of hardscape materials ranging from 3/4 inch to 3 inches in thickness, offering versatility and creativity in design.
Maintenance and Safety
How hot does a stone deck get in the summer?
The temperature of a stone deck depends on factors such as material type, color, and exposure to sunlight. Natural stones and porcelain tiles tend to maintain cooler surface temperatures compared to materials like concrete.
Does a stone deck get slippery when wet?
Slip resistance varies by material. Many hardscapes used around pools are designed with slip resistance in mind. When selecting pavers, research their slip resistance properties and refer to the manufacturer’s specifications.
How can I keep my patio dry underneath a stone deck?
To keep the area beneath a stone deck dry, consider installing an under-deck drainage system and building the deck with a slight pitch to facilitate water runoff.
Is StoneDeks System only used for stone and pavers?
While primarily designed for hardscape materials, the system can also be used with synthetic turf, making it suitable for various applications, including pool decks.
