As many of you know, we are based in Ohio, where we feel all four seasons to their fullest extent. As such, it got us thinking about the upcoming winter months, and how to plan for cold and snow in relation to your deck or outdoor space.
It’s a common misconception that a deck can only be used during warm weather. But with some minor adjustments, you can utilize your deck into the winter months as well.
One of the biggest concerns when thinking of enjoying a deck in the winter is cold temperatures. A fairly easy way to get around this issue is to purchase patio heaters around the deck/outdoor space. Although it’s not quite the same as a 75 degree sunny summer day, it’ll give you a feeling of warmth in an otherwise chilly setting.
You may also want to investigate the idea of a patio cover – that being either a permanent deck covering or an awning that can be removed come springtime. This can protect the deck – and those enjoying it – from leaves or snow falling.
A hot tub is always another option to warm up your cold outdoor space in the winter. This can offer the ability to utilize the deck longer into the winter season, making the most of your outdoor living investment.
It’s important to remember that you’ll probably want to swap out whatever furniture you’re using in the summer to something water-resistant and durable for winter months. Also note that an outdoor rug or decorations can help make the area seem cozier as well.
Any of you that are located where winter hits hard, how long into the season do you use your outdoor space? What preparations do you take to make the area winter-ready?
